FIRST-EVER FORMULA ONE NIGHT RACE!
For the past couple of mths, Singaporeans big and small alike, must hv in some way been affected by the onslaught of construction work along esplanade and cityhall. It is no secret to what mega-big event they were gearing up for.....
on Wednesday night, I was having a very romantic albeit wallet-friendly dinner at the alfresco marina sq foodcourt...
... when i commented how bright the city landscape was at 8.30pm.
to which Ting replied, "so many lights.. what is the point of it being a NIGHT race?"
Totally out of point but, DO NOT eat hotdog noodles however much you are craving for hotdogs. The salt machiam free one! =(
Shortly after Ting's "too bright" comment, experts say the lightings would prove to be dangerous in the event of rain. Something about reflective puddles of water and the cars being so close to the ground.
So imagine my horror when this downpour greeted mummy and me on our morning drive to work on the starting day itself?
And yups, tt is my P-plate on mama's Mercedes. *unglam*
Thankfully, the skies cleared up quite abit towards the evening. :)
WORLD'S FIRST FORMULA 1 NIGHT RACE!!!! woots~
For people without tickets, the gates were sealed off with black cloth. Must maintain exclusive factor ba.. Like tt even if they could see the zooming cars, photos are impossible. But who cares, can hear can liao. And trust me, everyone within a 3-mrt-stop radius should be able to hear the roars of the engines.
The organisers were so shrewed tt they deprived the public entirely. Even the outdoor Marina Sq foodcourt was closed just so cheapo locals can't sneak views and have to buy outrageously over-priced tickets from the touts. I REALLY SAW TOUTS!!! Didn't think I would ever live to see them allowed on Singapore streets. =D
Thanks to Gerald, I got the rare opportunity to partake in this once in a lifetime experience!!!
Junhong and myself lah... Jessica and Darren lost out because of other commitments. :P
Hehe.. Although, I am no racing fan and other than having a driving license, I am pretty much a vehicle noob, the whole F1 environment was still able to leave me super-high the whole night. Aiyah, I don't know how to put into words.. The whole thing was just so darn exciting lah! =X
The lanyards attached to our tickets is the higher class one.. Not the single-coloured walkabout orange ones.. The words are not printed but embroidered wor! Teehee~
As i eagerly tottered behind the guys in search for our entrance, I met Xinyu and Gaozheng at Marina Square. So qiao hor?
FINALLY!!!! Nerves in overdrive! ^^
Thoughtful Gerald didn't forget the all-important earplugs!!!! The din was deafening!
Junhong and Gerald. Both straight out of camp eager to be part of history!
Me with the backdrop of the green zone at the floating platform. We were given ALLOCATED seats at the Bay Grandstand which provides the perfect view for the first-ever under bridge race road thingy as I heard the presenter say. *happy*
Both the army boys have no camera phone so we had to settle for my grainy 2 mega-pix camera phone because silly me brought a camera with no battery. *smacks head*
Soon, sitting high up in the benches got boring so we left to wander among the crowd...
Massive barrel-loads of petrol... Probably jet fuel?
Containers holding spare tires!!!! Going at 300km/h sure wears down tires fast...
Technicians fixing up a F1 car..
The less impressive models for the earlier GP motor race.
We finally reach the trackside. See, that is the difference! The fences here are not sealed and if you reach out, i seriously think you could touch the cars! Btw, this is the Paddock Club area where I heard tickets were going at USD 7,500 per pax! *faints*
Oh ya, apparently some gossip mills have it that Michelle Yeoh RSVP places here and Beckham made a short showing but leaving before the press could catch him! Awww... He is so sweet lah! Didn't want to steal the limelight from the racers. He will always be my fav soccer player.. Well I suppose it helps that he is the only soccer player I know. =)
What is a commercial event without profitting?? 1 Ferarri polo tee costs SGD 120! I'm a poor student. :(
And I got to take a photo with race leader and 2nd runner-up in the Singapore leg, Lewis Hamilton!!!!!!! *screams in a fan-like way* ahahaha!
Squeezing with the crowds, getting our eardrums thumping and shouting our voices hoarse, we joined Xinyu and Gaozheng on the 21st storey of the EDB building. Free drinks and aircon is the life man!!!
Bird's eye view of the track... Not clear? Blame the phone...
Nice nice photos from Google. (like duh?!) That is the old Supreme Court in the background..
To actually catch the car when they are moving takes a bloody good camera!
See the smoke? When the cars break, sparks fly!
Anyway, in case some missed the twists and turns of the finals, here are the major parts. =)
Leading the pack, Felipe Massa must have kicked himself for speeding off without checking that the fuel line was up.
By pulling the whole thing off and having to wait for the Ferrari crew to come dislodge it, Massa was reduced from first to last position... Suay!
Disappointed..
Champion Fernando Alonso from Renault was unfortunate in the qualifying round which an engine failure put him at 15th place for the actual race. Just 24 hours before the finals, he publicly ruled out his chances of winning in front of the world media.
Well, looks like the 2 time Formula 1 winner became the emerging darkhorse in the Singapore Grand Prix which saw him overtake 14 out of 20 cars in total.
In the final fourth lap (out of 61 laps), the 2nd Ferrari racer and last yr's Formula 1 winner Kimi Raikonnen (handsome guy!) crashed out in a rather comical way - his front wheel rolled off as he scrapped along the side. Tt put Ferrari out and Mercedes leads them all the the group standings.
Unexpected hur? I thought Ferrari was like the god of cars or something.
Btw, 1st runner-up Nico Rosberg looks so like Leonardo Dicaprio!
Nv bluff ba? *swoons*
Victory is celebrated with BIG bottles of champagne which the winners sprayed into the crowd frm the grandstands.. Wasted! :P
Anyway, if one presumed the madness of detours and horrible road conditions would end with the departure of the World's first night race, they would be sorely upset by the much worse traffic jams caused by repairing the roads and removing the signage.
The day after was so horrid tt mama and I had to have dinner out. But the same camera phone is lousy so no pictures of food. I mean what is the point of uploading unappetizing food right? >.<
Before I come across as unappreciative, THANK YOU GERALD!
